Geo draws criticism! March 22, 2010

Filed under: Pakistani Channels & Journalism — mediainpakistan @ 10:44 pm

Geo TV, a subsidiary of the Jang group of newspapers, is an Urdu Pakistani television network which was established in May 2002. In Urdu the word “geo” means to “live on”. Geo was the 1st private local channel of Pakistan thus developed a huge viewership instantaneously. Even now a staggering number of people rate it as the most credible news channel of the country.  However, Geo TV has been criticized by the Pakistani government as well as the masses who believe the channel promotes sensationalism in order to increase its returns and gain popularity. Moreover, the channel is seen as a major reporter of negative news regarding Pakistan, causing general depression and pessimistic viewership experience. Pakistani government criticized the channel’s coverage of the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir, as GEO’s coverage of the tragedy included disturbing scenes of victims and disaster zones.

A noteworthy target of criticism for the channel is Dr. Shahid Masood, whose anti-government point of views are seen as extreme and ignorant of positive advances the government has ever made. Masood and the GEO News program were the reasons cited when the government banned the transmission of the channel during the Emergency of 2007.

Hamid Mir, anchor person of one of the most popular GEO political talk show Capital Talk, confirmed in an interview with the CBC his strong political views. It further raised doubts and questions in the eyes of the masses regarding Mir’s ability to present fair and balanced news matters. Still he is well liked by the viewers for his straight forward questioning.

During the temporary ban of the channel, GEO launched a web page, Support GEO, for viewers to write messages of support, which would further be approved for public viewing. Negative comments about the channel’s practices, or justification of its removal from Pakistani television, were not accepted and were constantly rejected. Given the channel’s claims of mastering democracy, GEO’s denial to recognize its own criticism was seen as hypocritical. A blog, by the name of Musharraf Supporters, was started in response to adjust those whose opinions were rejected on GEO’s website and wanted their criticism to be published.

Keeping the above points in view comes the opinion that Geo has become a tool of anti-Pakistan elements, the government at times going as far as claiming that its top notch anchors and journalists have sold themselves to foreign spy agencies. This view is shared by a large number of the educated class as well but sadly, the literacy rate being less then 60%, we in Pakistan cannot boast of having a large well educated segment in our populace, hence Geo and its alleged propaganda machine enjoy much fan following in the masses.

    Absolutey right. That’s the truth.

Why do people like us have always a feeling after watching Geo that something is wrong with this TV, It might be supported by US/INDIA and the plan is to destroy Pakistan. Be aware that media plays a big big role in such cases.

  3. Wafa Says:

Why geo showed peoples?bodies without head, only finger parts, people dying after bomb blast? Does any other channel show these things?

  4. Fatima Says:

I think you are not aware of GEO…its been funded by USA govt. Just think what Jew/Indian/ American lobby want? The basic idea is to promote frustration, and despondence in a nation, so they start to demoralize and the future can be mapped as they want to project it in the minds of 50 percent illiterate population that are born Muslim, can’t read, but can see.

  5. Taha Says:

Why on earth USA is concern with only GEO, why CNN, BBC and Bush quote GEO? Why not other TV channels in China, Japan, Cuba, India, Saudi Arabia, France? Why only Pakistan?

By a private channel!

  9. Shan Says:

i agree, these talk shows have transgressed the rights and wrongs of journalism altogether.negative opinion are expressed about politician that are often unsupported by facts . in a country like Pakistan where the illiterate man is ready to believe whatever he is told ,this increases the amount of pessimism among masses.

Its true that Geo TV is contributing to the menace that our country is stuck in and the author has given a very comprehensive analysis of how media can be used to exploit the already agitated minds of the masses.

  14. Huma Says:

i believe there need to be restrictions on certain issues like abusing govt. officials, calling them names, being rude to them and the most important of all ‘dramatizing’ the entire situation so much that it does not create awareness but compels one to only hate your own country.

  25. sunia Says:

    hate hate hate geo

  26. Kinza Says:

Geo does over-amplify things with a plan. Be it Meera or the head of the State, they’d deal with both in the same musical tunes, which at times are actually being composed by mysterious sources. Thanks for bringing this up in your article, a reminder for us to sift the good from the not-so-good being poured into our living rooms all day long.

  27. anum Says:

love the article. you spoke my heart out.

  28. anum saulat Says:

what i dont like about geo is that it keeps dragging the news over and over again. out tv channels should also highlight the positive sight of our country. that will atleast create a peaceful atmosphere in the country,

  29. zafar Says:

This blog should be eye opener for geo people. Excellent blog.

  30. zahida Says:

Their primary objective is to discredit all politicians one by one.

  31. salman Says:

Geo trying to be power broker in Pakistan.

  32. Alia Says:

Geo trying to be power broker in Pakistan.

  33. nadia Says:

Why Geo people do not understand that it loosing creditability

  34. mujahid Says:

I am from Hazara. why geo did not oppose renaming of our province before hand.

  35. naveed Says:

Geo in deed big channel but it does not attain maturity. It esponsible for a new culture in journalism. People fed up with their camera men who move here and there as they have guns in their hands. People often beat them. doctors beat them recently.

  36. sadiq Says:

Why shiza slect Geo only to open criticism, all chanells doing same, may be others miles ahead in yellow journalism. Hope with passage of time they get maturity. Presently they all in mad race to get more audience. They should give politicians time and not conspire military take over.

  37. rohma Says:

    good work
